Avus Gerlach is an artist living at Coburg Village. Her artwork is one of her passions. Her love of both art and nature was highlighted when The Lutheran Care Network used her painting, “Peace: A Small Town,” on its Christmas card.
The card illustrated a scene from rural Minnesota, where Avus once attended a Lutheran women’s conference.
“This picture is my favorite,” said Avus, who at 90 is still able to live independently in her own apartment at Coburg Village, where she enjoys all the amenities that the community has to offer.
Avus is from a creative family that has designed parks, floral arrangements, homes and clothing. “They all lived in Germany,” she said, “so my instincts are in the blood rather than through any formal training.
This piece of artwork holds special meaning for Avus, who comes from a long line of German Lutherans.
“I call it, Peace: A Small Town, where everyone knows and respects everyone else, where all attend the same church, which is the first visible thing you see as you approach the town … all at peace under a blanket of snow.”
The hues in the painting are blue, the color of serenity, she said. The blue is punctuated by pure white snow.
Avus’ vision of a place where everyone is respected and at peace, reflects the mission of The Lutheran Care Network. We care for seniors’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Their well-being and happiness come first, as expressed in the face of 90-year-old Avus.
