According to the CDC, each year, millions of adults sixty-five years of age and older fall. In fact, more than one out of four older people fall each year. Falling once doubles your chances of falling again. Physical therapy can help reduce your risk of falling.
Select Rehabilitation offers VSTBalance an automated fall-risk assessment tool that uses Artificial Intelligence with machine vision to identify deficits in balance, gait, and function – the three main indicators of fall risk. Once deficits are found, physical therapy can help address deficits and reduce fall risk. Additionally, Brian Van Sise, PT, Select Rehabilitation’s clinical lead for Coburg Village, specializes in treatment for dizziness, vertigo, and balance issues.
Brian has more than twenty-five years of experience practicing in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He graduated from Upstate Medical University in 2001 with a Master of Physical Therapy degree.
Originally from Long Island, Brian moved to Keene, New York, with his family when he was 16. He recalls that it was a bit of an adjustment to go from a high school with more than 1200 students to 11. Keene was, and still is, a hub for outdoor sports enthusiasts; it was there he became interested in bobsledding. This skill served him well after high school when he joined the Air Force where he served for four years as a dental lab technician and a member of the Air Force bobsled team. Brian had stop sliding many years ago, but this past winter, came out of “retirement” to help teach a driving school. Brian states there is nothing better than going 70 MPH without a motor.
After leaving the Air Force, Brian met his wife, Karen, relocated to the Capital Region, and pursued his degree in physical therapy.
When asked what he enjoys most about his role at Coburg Village, he explains that he likes being part of the community. He has always liked working with people and has enjoyed meeting the residents. Brian states that the Coburg staff and residents have been very welcoming. He reflects that he’s probably treated close to 50,000 patients over the course of his career. Brian states “that although back pain is a common complaint to be treated in PT, each patient is different and every treatment requires an individualized approach.
Brian is also a photographer and is the official sports photographer for the Shenendehowa School District. For past 10 years, Brian has been attending Cosplay conventions which are events where fans gather to celebrate popular culture, movies, anime, manga, and video games, by dressing up as their favorite characters.
Brian’s wife, Karen, is a speech therapist in the Scotia-Glenville school district. Their son, Conor, is a film major. Brian and Karen have discovered a passion for traveling, visiting Portugal, Iceland and Italy over the past three years.
