“Living at Coburg Village is like being on a cruise ship that doesn’t move,” says Coburg Residents’ Association President, Kirk Gleason. That’s because on top of the great food and service, there are a ton of activities always happening at the community. While many events are organized by the Coburg Village Activities Department — such as the multiple music performances and movies each week, visits to the theatre, group trips, etc.—many more activities are provided by a separate organization that works in conjunction with Coburg Village Administration called the Residents’ Association (RA).

The RA is run by Coburg Village residents and funded from events and the minimal resident dues (only $15 for the whole year!). It is made up of 17 committees and includes 9 special events held throughout the year. The RA meets on the first Thursday of every month, and everyone is invited. These meetings not only cover upcoming events and give updates on committee activities; they also include stories about local history and even stand-up jokes. It’s an engaging time for everyone who comes!

The RA committees encompass a wide range of interests including art, books, card games, sewing/knitting, music, spirituality, crafts, food, gardening, writing, woodworking, and so much more! They provide residents with:

  • Social activities
  • Chances to showcase resident art and hobbies
  • Opportunities to enhance Village amenities like the library, greenhouse, general store, woodshop, & outdoor flower beds
  • Bingo Sundays
  • Special events like pizza parties; Superbowl, Kentucky Derby & New Year’s parties; Veterans’ Day celebrations; Craft Fairs; putting, bocce & cornhole contests; tag sales; and more

But Kirk’s favorite aspect of the RA is the Buddy Committee. This group matches every new resident with a Coburg Buddy, someone who has already been living here a while and is established in Village life. The Buddy will show the new resident around, bring them to meals, introduce them to other residents, and help them find activities or events they may be interested in.

Kirk advises new residents to put themselves out there. “Don’t just sit in your apartment—be sure to go out and meet people,” he says. “Take advantage of your assigned Buddy, reach out to anyone living near you, or contact me directly so we can help you find things you like to do. Exercise, enjoy the dining. Everyone here is so nice and willing to go out of their way to help you. The staff is outstanding!”

Check your monthly activity calendar to keep an eye on upcoming activities and be sure to join the next RA meeting on the first Thursday of the month for the latest information!
